Membership Plan

The AUPP’s Professional Practitioner requirements start at a level that our industry felt is solid and each year the requirements to join/retain membership become more refined and focused on client and practitioner safety.

Year 1 (2020) Requirements

  1. Ethical requirements
    1. Does not use piercing guns (including mechanical, spring loaded, or hand pressure systems)
    2. Does not do intimate piercings (nipple/genital) on clients under 18
    3. Does not pierce clients under the age of 16 without parental consent
    4. Only pierces clients who are able to give informed consent (ie: no infants, toddlers, or intoxicated/drug affected individuals)
  2. Training requirements
    1. valid BBP training certificate
    2. valid First Aid & CPR certificate
    3. valid state required recognised required certifications (TAFE, UNI etc)
  3. Environmental requirements
    1. Gives written and verbal aftercare instructions for skin penetration procedures
    2. A secured sharps disposal container with direct access in procedure room (wall mounted is suggested)
    3. Dedicated biohazard tool container (if reprocessing tools)
    4. Dedicated warm hand washing facilities within direct access of procedure room (inside room is suggested)
    5. Easy to clean non-porous flooring and surfaces in procedure room
  4. Sterility requirements
    1. Submits yearly autoclave spore tests
  5. PPE requirements
    1. Uses single use non-latex gloves for skin penetration procedures

Year 2 (2022) Requirements

  1. Ethical requirements
    1. No piercing guns used by any staff member (including mechanical, spring loaded, or hand pressure systems)
    2. Does not use external thread or step-down jewellery for initial or healing piercings
    3. Does not pierce with, or install in a healing wound, any jewellery in which a seam, hinge, join, or hallmark may pass through the piercing channel
    4. Pierces/installs in healing piercings only the following materials:
      1. Titanium
      2. Surgical Stainless Steel
      3. Niobium
      4. Glass
      5. Solid Gold
      6. Solid Platinum
      7. Biocompatible polymers
    5. Does not sell or install acrylic/PMMA body jewellery
    6. Single use marking implements (single use pen is recommended, single use tooth-pick with ink is acceptable)
  2. Training requirements
    1. valid COVID-19 Safety Training (if required by your state)
    2. Display and understands correct hand washing instructions
  3. Environmental requirements
    1. Liquid hand-soap dispenser next to hand washing sink 
    2. Single-handed or hands free paper towel dispenser/hand drying facilities next to hand washing sink
    3. Dedicated sterilisation area with door and HEPA air filter (if reprocessing tools)
    4. HEPA air filter or other air purification system in the piercing room
    5. Sterilised piercing implements kept in enclosed non-porous containers
    6. Biohazardous waste containers must have a hands-free lid and marked “Biohazard”
    7. Disposable non-latex gloves at jewellery displays/counter for handling jewellery
  4. Sterility requirements
    1. Submits monthly autoclave spore or helix tests
    2. Uses single use aseptic drape and/or a visual identifying prep (such as iodine) for skin penetration procedures
    3. Uses and records a class 5 integrator or class 6 emulator for every autoclave cycle
    4. Uses an autoclave with Class B or Class S programs for hollow and porous loads
  5. PPE requirements
    1. Uses PPE for manual tool reprocessing (if applicable), including:
      1. disposable gloves
      2. disposable apron
      3. disposable arm sleeves
      4. disposable mouth protection
      5. eye protection (disposable mask with eye shield suggested)

Year 3 (2023) Requirements

  1. Ethical requirements
    1. No acrylic/PMMA body jewellery sold by any staff member
    2. No external thread jewellery sold or used by any staff member
    3. Piercers/installs in healing piercings only the following materials:
      1. ASTM F-136 (Ti6Al4V ELI) Implant grade Titanium
      2. ASTM F-1295 (Ti6Al7Nb ELI) Implant grade Titanium
      3. ASTM F-138  (ISO 10993-6, 10993-10 and/or 10993-11) Implant grade Steel
      4. ASTM B392 compliant Niobium (ie: Grade 2 Niobium, Grade 4 Niobium)
      5. Glass that is lead free (ie: Fused quartz, Borosilicate, Soda-lime)
      6. Solid 14kt+ gold (nickel and cadmium free)
      7. Solid Platinum (cadmium, nickel, and lead free)
      8. ASTM F754 Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
      9. USP VI compliant biocompatible polymers
  2. Environmental requirements
    1. Completely separate, walled procedural room with door(s)
      1. Curtains are not accepted as dividers/separators
    2. If room is used for other services (such as tattooing) it must be thoroughly cleaned before use for piercing
    3. Non-porous fixings/curtains/decorations in procedure room (if applicable)
    4. Obtains release forms for every skin-penetration procedure (ID sighted and/or recorded)
    5. Uses an aseptic single use set-up, ie:
      1. suitable skin prep (individually packaged recommended)
      2. aseptic drape and or a visual identifying prep (such as iodine)
      3. marking implements (single use pen is recommended)
      4. post cleaning care (sterile wipe/gauze recommended)
    6. Dedicated warm hand washing facilities within direct access of procedure room (inside room is suggested with foot or motion controlled suggested)
    7. Has submitted a video walk-through of studio, including:
      1. outside of store
      2. waiting room
      3. procedural room
      4. jewellery display(s)
      5. reprocessing room (if applicable)
  3. Sterility requirements
  • Practices a minimum of one of the following tests for all actively used  sterilisers:
    • Daily helix tests
    • Weekly in-house spore testing
    • Monthly third party spore testing
  • PPE requirements
    1. Uses mask and beard-net (if applicable) for every skin penetration procedure that has a potential of bodily fluid risk (ie oral piercings, piercings that cause aerosol bodily fluids)
    2. Uses sterile single use non-latex gloves for skin penetration procedures
